Artist Statement September 2021

Most of you look old enough to walk, don’t ask me to chew and digest your food for you.

However, I will hold your hand as we cross the street.

The making of paintings that one can bear to live with much less call good is reasonably difficult. If we exclude all of the more grueling aspects of the world.

Much of the popular contemporary American paintings that I see look more like magazine illustration to me. I have nothing against magazine illustration, those types of pictures easily speak a thousand words. And yet without wanting to hang this statement on cliché I will say that really good painting pushes closer to 10,000 words. We can all be thankful for that.

I try to make paintings that don’t use words, that do the things that words don’t do.

If I could speak about it, I would. Some things are best left unsaid, in paint.

(I did say I’d hold your hand, but don’t ask me to breast feed you, in public at this age!)

Once the painting is out of my body and up on the wall it becomes less about me and more about the world eats and shapes it. They are for you to write your own story into. But mind you do not go searching for snazzy political rhetoric here, there isn’t any. Besides, the revolution is being televised you don’t need painting for that.

What of the non-meaning, the absurd and divine? Like the mad woman’s dream, something wild from the edge of town. What is it to dream as the mad woman? And who is she/he/we/they? I think, all souls are immortal but in losing their wings they fall to earth, this is the nature of our human condition.

The nature of the brush, like the wing is upward movement, to partake in the madness and divinity.

Consider this your bedtime story and good night kiss.
